Many people have been emailing us that they are experiencing the supernatural and the Manifest Presence of God while reading our blog and listening to our podcast. The Holy Spirit has been declaring God’s glorious mind and will, as well as, the unfolding of His plans and purposes concerning our ministry both here in the United States and around the world. The source of this knowledge is found in the anointing of the Holy Spirit, first on the Messiah (The Lord Jesus Christ) and secondly, upon the body of Christ (the sons of the Living God).

This should be of no surprise to us because Acts 10:37-38 says, “You know what has happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached–how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.”

The words that Peter used for anoint and anointing are translated from the words mashach in Hebrew and chrio in Greek. The original application of these words can be found in the dabbing or smearing of either oil or ointment on sacred things (like the Tabernacle) or persons (like King David).

The oldest and most sacred of these, it would seem, was the anointing of the Old Testament prophet, priest or king. The individual was usually anointed by the pouring oil upon his head. This anointing was then usually coupled with a ceremony regarded as sacred and special from the of earliest times, and observed not in Israel only, but throughout the Middle East.

Among the Israelite people it was believed that such anointing created a transference (to the anointed person) of something of the authority, holiness and virtue of the LORD God Almighty (Jehovah El Shaddai). Such was the case for the Kings of Judah and Israel, because according to Scripture, those who were anointed received a special endowment of the Spirit of Yahweh (see 1 Samuel 16:13 and Isaiah 61:1).

This was the basis for the profound reverence held for the king, the prophet and the priest. Such a person was seen as a sacred personage, “the anointed”, which passed over into our language through the Greek title of Christos, as it now appears in our Bibles as “Christ”.

THE CHRIST WAS ANOINTED WITH THE OIL OF GLADNESS

Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever; a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom. You love righteousness and hate wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy. All your robes are fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia; from palaces adorned with ivory the music of the strings makes you glad. Psalm 45:6-8

The Biblical Principle of the Anointing of the Holy Spirit is pictured in the Old Testament’s Anointing Oil

  •  The Anointing Oil is an Old Testament type of the Holy Spirit.
  •  This sacred use of Anointing with Oil consecrated things or persons to The LORD.
  •  The Anointing Oil, when applied to things or persons, gave them a spiritual sacredness so as to fit them for holy ministry.
  •  Spiritually speaking, when one the Anointing Oil was applied to an individual it was for the purpose of setting them apart and them receiving a special endowment of the Holy Spirit.

The Purpose of the Anointing Oil

  •  To Consecrate: The meaning of consecrate is to set apart, prepare and dedicate a person to God.

And he poured of the anointing oil upon Aaron’s head, and anointed him, to consecrate him.   Leviticus 8:12

  •  To Bring Deliverance

And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing. Isaiah 10:27 KJV

The meaning of deliverance is to draw out, set free, rescue, save or cause to escape.5

  • To Empower and Send with Kingdom Purpose

Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole country-side. The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written: “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent me…” Luke 4:14-18

In Acts 10:38 the verb “anointed” is in the active voice. God is doing the acting.

The Person used by God to anoint the Lord Jesus was a simple element like the Anointing Oil of the Old Testament, but with the Person of the Holy Spirit. God sent the Holy Spirit to rest upon His Son Jesus for the ministry which He as the Man Christ Jesus was to accomplish on the earth. The Holy Spirit did not act as the anointer but the anointing.

Today, because we are the “body of Christ”, Father God is the Anointer and the Holy Spirit is the anointing Himself. Thus the Person of the Holy Spirit lives in and rests upon us for the sake of providing the supernatural equipment for the ministry to which our Lord and we are called to do. We must ask the Father to anoint us with a “Fresh Anointing” so that we can be effective in both life and ministry.

Next week I will be writing on the Manifest Presence of the Holy Spirit in and on the sons of God. God bless you today!
